Creating Handmade, Beaded Animals

In South Africa, it is common to see these beaded animals sold on street corners in most cities. They're delightful in their personalities and impressive in their detail.

Zimbu Trading partnered with the most talented of any of these artisans that they came across, a man named Tineyi Chikanga, who has been hand-making these intricate beaded animals, as well as ornaments and key chains, in his home workshop for more than 10 years. Using recycled wire and pliers, Tineyi builds out a wireframe of the animal, then he and his assistants strings beads onto long strands of wire and weave them through the frame. Finally, the detail work of eyes, ears, and tails are completed, and the product is ready to sell.
